Admission and Enrollment

Students will be admitted to the PhD Program according to the following criteria:

a) Master's degrees that give direct access to this doctorate (No training supplements).

Students who hold any of the following Master's degrees may be admitted directly, with prior authorization from the PhD Program’s Academic Committee:

• Master’s in Advanced Applied Chemistry
• Master’s in Pesticide and Contaminant Residues
• Master’s in Industrial and Agri-Food Biotechnology
• Master’s in Water and Environment in Semi-Arid Areas
• Master’s in the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory
• Master’s in Chemistry (Inter-university)

Students who have completed official Master's degrees of the same level and field of knowledge at a Spanish or foreign university may also gain access, under the same conditions, with prior authorization from the PhD Program’s Academic Committee.

b) Master's degrees or training programs that may access this Doctorate requiring training supplements.

Those students who have obtained a degree in an Official Master's Degree, or who have completed a PhD Program training period, of the same level but a different field of knowledge in a Spanish or foreign university may also access these studies. Students may be admitted with prior authorization from the PhD Program’s Academic Committee, who will assess the adequacy of the student’s training profile in relation to the theme of the program's research lines. In this case, students must complete training supplements, according to the assigned research line. The credits to be taken will be selected from among the courses corresponding to the UAL Master's training offer or, failing that, from other related courses with a similar theme, proposed by the tutor, with prior authorization from the PhD Program’s Academic Committee.
The degree’s Academic Committee may recognize or validate them in a reasoned way, whether totally or partially, based on the training accredited to the student. These training supplements should preferably be completed in the first year of study and, in any event, before the end of studies.
In all cases, for admission to be granted by the Academic Committee, the student candidate must present an official request stating that a professor on the program has agreed to the candidate's scientific and academic direction on one of the research lines proposed in the same.

Selection criteria:

In the event that the demand for admission exceeds the offer, the Program’s Academic Committee will prioritize the applications through a process assessing the merits claimed by the candidates according to the following selection criteria:

1. Academic record (up to 40 points).
2. Professional experience (contracts and / or research grants) (up to 20 points).
3. Research curriculum (scientific publications, communications to congresses, etc.) (up to 20 points).
4. Adaptation of the training profile to the requested line (up to 10 points).
5. Other merits (languages, etc.) (up to 10 points).

The selection criteria and their assessment will be made public and reviewed annually by the Academic Committee. After the selection process, an ordered list of those admitted or excluded will be drawn up.

Admission of students with special needs derived from disability.

UAL has a dedicated unit for the attention of students with disabilities, as well as regulations that provide care for students with special educational needs. Students interested in accessing the program who have a disability may arrange an interview with the Academic Committee, who will assess the possible influence that the student’s disability may have on developing the thesis, whether because it might affect the execution of the experimental part or because it may limit the carrying out of the program’s training activities. The Academic Committee will write an assessment report and will suggest the plan that best favors the interested party in achieving the degree competencies.

Part-time students.

The University of Almería provides for part-time students in the PhD Program teaching, for whom there is a specific training activities program.
For full-time students, it is estimated that they should have an itinerary planned for 3 years to complete the doctoral thesis, with the possibility of a 1-year extension, extendable to a further additional year. In the case of part-time students (active professionals, etc.), the planned itinerary is 5 years, which can be extended by 2 more years, expandable to an additional year. The admission criteria will be the same for full-time and part-time students, who will have to establish and justify their time commitment in the admission application.
