This interview will be the responsibility of the PhD Program’s Academic Committee, together with the professors/researchers who offer places on their projects to carry out the research period.

The University of Almería provides for part-time students on the Computer Science PhD Program, with a specific training activities program for said students.

For full-time students, it is estimated that, to complete the doctoral thesis, a 3-year itinerary plan is required, with the possibility of a 1-year extension. In the case of part-time students (active professionals, etc.), the planned itinerary is 6 years, and can be extended by 2 more years, depending on the personal situation and the requirements of the thesis in question.

The admission criteria will be the same for full-time and part-time students, who will have to establish and justify their time commitment in the admission application.

For students who have specific educational needs deriving from disabilities, those systems and procedures should include adequate support and advisory services, which will assess the possible need for curricular adjustments, itineraries or study alternatives.

Part-time students

The University of Almeria contemplates the figure of a part-time student in the teaching organization of the doctoral program in computer science.

The doctoral student must complete his or her studies in a maximum of 3 academic years, if enrolled full time, or 5 academic years, if enrolled part time, from the date of admission to the program until the presentation of the doctoral thesis.

In accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, on an extraordinary basis, the committee responsible for the program may authorize the extension of this period for one more year, which may exceptionally be extended for another additional year, under the conditions established in the corresponding doctoral program. In the case of part-time studies, the extension may be authorized for two more years, which, exceptionally, may also be extended for another additional year.

Without prejudice to the particular conditions that may be established in the doctoral program report, in order to consider the granting of the extension, the student must accredit the exceptional conditions that justify it, and submit a report on the planning of studies and the necessary time requirements, which must be endorsed by his or her Thesis Director.

For the purposes of calculating the previous period, sick leave, pregnancy or any other cause provided by current regulations will not be taken into account.

Likewise, the doctoral student may request a temporary leave of absence from the program for a maximum period of one year, extendable up to one more year. This request must be addressed and justified to the academic committee responsible for the program, which will decide whether the student's request can be granted.

The University of Almeria sets a minimum percentage of 30% of places for part-time enrollment. In general, it is established that the general regime for the teaching of doctorates will be full-time, however, those places not covered by the quota of places for full-time enrollment may be offered part-time in the terms already explained and according to the criteria of the Academic Committee.

The regime of permanence, in particular, the change from full-time to part-time, shall not exempt the doctoral student from the responsibilities contracted by reason of agreements, grants and scholarships awarded for a specific mode of study.

Students who wish to study in a Doctoral Program on a part-time basis must apply to the Academic Committee of the Program when they submit their application for admission to the program or, once admitted, when they consider that there are circumstances that justify part-time study, in any case, the committee will evaluate the duly motivated applications on the basis of

  1. Reconciliation of the doctoral student's work or business activity.
  2. Reconciliation of the doctoral student's family life (large family, dependent children, dependent persons, etc.).
  3. Simultaneity of other specialized training at university level on a part-time basis.
  4. Reconciliation of high-level sports activity
  5. Physical, sensory or psychic disability determining for part-time teaching 6. Exercise of public office or representation.
  6. Other duly accredited that in the opinion of the Academic Committee motivate part-time teaching.

The application for part-time admission must be accompanied by the pertinent documentation or certification that accredits or supports the reason for the application. The Academic Committee, if deemed necessary, may request clarification or improvement of the student's application.

Recognition of this status must be ratified annually by the Academic Committee.

The loss of the condition that covers the application for part-time studies will automatically produce the change of dedication of the student to full-time, from that moment, they will have three years until the submission of the application for the deposit of the doctoral thesis, provided that no more than two years have elapsed under the condition of part-time student.

Any full-time student may request, in a motivated manner, the status of part-time student, which will be granted once accredited for annual periods until the submission of the application for the deposit of the doctoral thesis within a total maximum period of five years.

Changes in the type of studies shall not alter or exempt the doctoral student from the obligations that he/she has contracted or that may arise from the use of any type of agreements, grants or scholarships that have been called and granted for a specific type of study.
