Objectives and Competencies

Objectives

The training gained from this curriculum should provide prospective graduates with the knowledge and skills to enable them to seek innovative solutions that will contribute to increasing productivity, improving the quality of agricultural products and the environment, and to the continuous advance of a sector that has turned the province of Almeria into a global leader in protected horticultural production, exercising its professional activity with responsibility, ethics and a spirit of service to the community. These goals will be developed respecting and promoting (a) fundamental rights and gender equality, (b) Human Rights and the principles of universal accessibility and design for all, and (c) the values of a peaceful and democratic culture.

The orientation of training toward research, innovation and development of multidisciplinary technical solutions applied to the engineering, design, management and equipment used in protected horticultural production systems is highlighted. During the process, students are prepared to acquire skills in two different areas, those of professional or research activity.

The basic and/or specific objectives should therefore be:

  • To encourage the development of an analytical, critical and innovative vision of the problems relating to factors involved in production systems. Technical, environmental and human factors.
  • To provide suitable technical and ethical training to practise the profession with the scientific and technical rigour that must be applied to a constantly changing sector that is evermore sensitized to the environment.
  • To encourage collaboration with other professionals in the sector, researchers, technicians, and managers, etc., allowing a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of horticultural systems, the principles of ergonomics, safety and health, and other specific aspects associated with the cultivation system.
  • To promote the use of scientific and research methodologies in problem-solving related to the intensive greenhouse production environment.
  • To promote the recognition and analysis of the differential characteristics of intensive production systems according to the environmental, social and technical contexts in which they are framed.
  • To deepen one's knowledge of the physiological and agronomic bases of horticultural crops and their agronomic management in the intensive greenhouse production environment.
  • To study in depth the design and management of the facilities and technological equipment required in the intensive horticulture sector.
  • To comprehensively study the physiological and technological bases of horticultural products during the post-harvest.
  • To integrate knowledge through research or technological innovation in horticulture, bringing together professional experiences and the training process.

Competencies

Competencies are the identifiable and evaluable set of knowledge, attitudes, values, abilities and skills, related to each other, which will allow the student to exercise the professional activity according to the requirements and standards used in the corresponding occupational area.

All the master’s at the University of Almeria explicitly include two types of competencies:

  • The generic competencies included in Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, which establishes the organization of official higher education.
  • The specific degree competencies. These competencies are detailed in the degree’s report and are related to its particular subjects. Some of these competencies may have been agreed at the Andalusian regional level, or for certain degrees, they may be regulated at the state level.
Cross-curricular competencies.

Cross-curricular competencies, referred to as CT, are considered those that, although not technical in nature, are necessary for the students to optimise their professional development.

  • CT4. To demonstrate communication competencies (oral and written).
  • CT1. To acquire skills in using ICTs.
  • CT2. To develop problem-solving abilities.
  • CT3. To train the student for group work within multidisciplinary contexts.

Basic, General and Cross-Curricular Competencies

The basic competencies for all master’s degrees were defined in R.D. 1393/2007 of 29 October. They will be progressively adapted and as established by the current R.D. 822/2021 of 28 September, which establishes the organization of university education and the quality assurance procedure.

General competencies for all master's degrees
CB6-To possess and understand knowledge That students have demonstrated they possess and understand knowledge that expands and improves on that associated with the first cycle, providing them a basis or opportunity for originality in developing and/or applying ideas, often in a research context.
CB7-Application of knowledge That students know how to apply the knowledge gained and are capable of problem-solving in new or unexplored settings within broader (or multi-disciplinary) contexts relating to their field of study.
CB8-Ability to make judgements That students can integrate knowledge and face the complexity of making judgements based on incomplete information which, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to applying their knowledge and judgements.
CB9-Communication capacity and social aptitude That students know how to communicate their conclusions –and the ultimate knowledge and reasons that support them– to both specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous manner.
CB10-Learning skills That students possess the learning skills that will enable them to continue studying in a way that will be largely self-directed or autonomous.
