Presentation

The general objective of the Master's in the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory is to achieve advanced and comprehensive training in the knowledge and application of experimental techniques, essential for the analysis and characterization of chemical substances and processes that are not covered by other masters at the national level.

From this point of view, the present Master’s aims to offer theoretical and experimental training in the field of chemistry, strongly grounded in knowledge of advanced instrumental techniques, taken from graduate training in Chemistry and related degrees, and having a double intention:

  • the qualification of professionals to facilitate their insertion into the world of work,
  • and to prepare graduates for doing a doctoral thesis or other R+D+i tasks.

Suggested profile for newly enrolled students

This Master's Degree is primarily aimed at those with undergraduate degrees in: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Physics, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Marine Sciences, Food Science and Technology, Oenology, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Agricultural Engineering who wish to specialise in applying their knowledge and skills to the field of agricultural production, the agrifood industry, or the chemical industry.

Since the Master's Degree aims to train professionals in advanced techniques, the bibliography and manuals are available mainly in English, as is the case with most of the qualifications to which the Master's Degree is directed. It is therefore recommended that applicants can read and understand scientific and professional texts (and understand audiovisual materials) in English. While all the scientific instrumentation used in the Master’s employs specific operating programmes, the logical work structure of these programmes is similar to that found in office packages, adapted to the task of each team. For this reason, it is important that those interested in the Master's Degree have computer skills, mainly with a good level of office programme skills.

Professional and Academic opportunities

Upon completing these studies, graduates will have the academic and professional career opportunities listed below:

Academic opportunities. Relation with other studies

img_7110002.jpgThe Master's in the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory provides the student with the possibility of specialised higher education that will enable him/her to continue to doctoral studies and/or to enter the labour market better prepared.

Consequently, the proposal of this Master as a link between the Degree in Chemistry (or similar) and UAL’s Doctorate in Advanced Chemistry programme seems appropriate.

Professional opportunities

The chemical industry, within which the agrifood industry is located, is one of the most important sectors in the Spanish economy. It includes other subsectors of great importance to Andalusia such as plastics and other materials (notably the stone derivatives and ceramic materials in Macael), fertilizers, pesticides, beverages, etc.

Companies in the south-east of Spain, as in other geographical areas, require the use of advanced chemical techniques and procedures

In this area, there are many chemical laboratories advanced in the use of scientific instrumentation, providing services to the agrifood and industrial sectors. This field represents a niche in which graduates and postdocs from the University of Almeria are commonly integrated.
