ABSTRACT:

MIXMATTERS addresses the challenge of harnessing complex agri-food biowaste streams which, due to their mixture with unwanted materials such as plastic, cardboard or metal, face significant limitations for valorisation. To tackle this challenge, the project develops and scales up an integrated system combining a mobile separation unit, a valorisation hub, decision-support tools, and digital product passports to ensure process traceability.

The project aims to demonstrate, in waste streams originating from wholesale markets, greenhouses, and the food and beverage industry, that plant biomass and non-commercial fruits can be converted into high-value products through six valorisation routes, including powdered ingredients, sugar concentrates, recombinant proteins, green fibres, bioactive compounds, and plastic monomers.
