Invasibility of the Catalonian Coast (NE Spain) by alien plants. Journal of Vegetation Science.
[Summary]
Summary:
The alien flora of the Baix Camp (NE Spain). The studied area is dominated by
coastal flash-flood streams with torrential hydrological and is intensely
humanised (urbanisations and, to a lesser extent, cultivated fields). Some
patches of the original Quercus ilex
woods still remain. The alien flora was analysed finding an unexpected great
percentage (13% metaphytes and 7% diaphytes).
The vast majority of them were introduced from the American Continent. The
environmental factors related to the invisibility of this and other areas of
the Western
Mediterranean are analysed by statistical methods. Findings suggest that climatic
resemblance between the native and alien species range, the existence of moist
soils in summer and human disturbance are probably some of the most important
factors involved in the invisibility at habitat, landscape and regional levels.
